Notable events in music history from December 2.

1966 – David Bowie

‘Rubber Band’ was released by David Bowie. The single was Bowie’s first on the Deram label, part of a three track audition tape he recorded to persuade the label to sign him. After having some critical success the song ultimately flopped and did not enter the UK charts.

1969 – The Supremes

Cindy Birdsong, member of The Supremes, was kidnapped at knife-point by a a man who worked in the building she lived in. Birdsong eventually escaped unharmed by jumping out of his car on a San Diego highway. Her kidnapper was arrested four days later in Las Vegas, Nevada.

1978 – Barbra Streisand & Neil Diamond

Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond’s ‘You Don’t Bring Me Flowers’ went to No.1 in the US Billboard chart. The song first came to be when a radio station engineer put both artist’s versions together and it got such a good response the station added it to their playlist. After being told about the edit, Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand decided to rerecord the song together. The new version went to No.1 in the US and No.5 in the UK within a week of release.

1983 – Michael Jackson

MTV aired the full 14 minute version of Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video for the first time. The video is now regarded as the most influential music video of all time, in 2009 it was inducted into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in the United States, the first example of a music video receiving this honour, for being “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant.

2002 – Oasis

Oasis frontman, Liam Gallagher was arrested and charged with assault after he attacked a police officer in Munich, it was claimed that the officer was “Kung-Fu” kicked by Gallagher. The incident happened at the Bayerischer hotel, resulting in the singer losing his two front teeth and a bodyguard assigned to Oasis being knocked out cold.
