Fashion student Joyce Tan was commissioned to create a series for four dresses for the site specific dance project Hinter Terra – The Forgotten Spaces. This is the latest project by the production team WECreate Productions the transcontinental company of screendance artists Ana Baer (MX/US) and Heike Salzer (GER/UK). The project in inspired by the colours, landscape and textures of Malta. The brief asked Joyce to respond to the weight of history of the island and the sense of different times all existing within one place reaching from the crusades to modern Malta and the changing spaces. Joyce’s creative response shows sympathy to placement and structure in the garments she has created. The four garments for the dancers tell a clear story across the collection and will also enhance Joyce’s skills and creativity as she progresses to her final year when she will create her graduate collection.
WECreate Productions are committed to exploring the possibilities of digital technology in service of collaborative art creation, they produce site-specific interdisciplinary works inspired by their shared fascination of extreme landscapes, place and narratives of sites. Their journeys encompass urban and rural landscapes, seeking to discover the unseen, the in-betweenness and the things that are in transformation. By engaging with environments in visceral dialogues, placing the body at the centre of the sensations, their poetic works capture the atmosphere of sites, and offer experiential embodied accounts of the places encountered.
Their screendances, performances and installations have been invited to festivals and venues in Mexico, Brazil, Iran, Greece, France, United Kingdom, Portugal, Spain and Italy and in 2019 their work Wild-er-ness was awarded the prize for Innovation by the Jeju Drone Film Festival in South Korea.
The new screendance work Hinter Terra – The Forgotten Spaces will be filmed on location in Malta in the Spring 2022.
