The second week of Premier League Darts took place in Glasgow last night, with Luke Littler taking the trophy after an early scare against Rob Cross.
The night was marred by crowd noise, with several players seemingly uncomfortable with whistling noises. Officials were forced to step in in an attempt to stop the whistling.
TUXtra darts correspondent Harvey Richards reports on the event:
Quarter Finals:
Luke Littler 6-5 Rob Cross
The opening game of the night came between reigning World Champion Luke Littler coming up against recent Players Championship 1 winner Rob Cross.
The game started with the first two legs resulting in a hold of throw for both players however in the third Rob Cross broke the Littler throw when Cross took out a 128 finish to stun The Nuke.
Cross was in good form after winning in the Players Championship midweek and he looked like he was sailing to victory after taking the next three legs to put himself 5-1 and in a commanding position.
Littler soon broke back to bring the game back to 5-3, when he narrowly missed the bull to take out the big fish and Cross narrowly missed double 20 to wrap the match up giving Littler a lifeline which he used his reliable double 10 to win the leg.
In the tenth leg Littler had the chance to check out double 10 narrowly missing which gave Cross the chance to checkout 61 where he had two match darts at his favourite double 18 which gave Littler the chance to strike and take the match to a decider.
In the final leg with the crowd behind him Littler left 88 after nine darts to snatch the win away from Cross.
Michael Van Gerwen 6-1 Stephen Bunting
Van Gerwen stormed into a 2-0 lead blowing Bunting away with his precision finishing, in the third leg Bunting missed three darts to win the leg and MVG checked out with ease.
A 122-checkout put Van Gerwen into a 5-0 with Bunting looking helpless as he was facing the machine that he can’t beat, especially when Michael Van Gerwen is on top form.
Van Gerwen missed double seven to win the match and whitewash Bunting, but the Bullet was able to spare his blushes and prevent him becoming the first player to be whitewashed in this year’s Premier League by checking out 87 to keep them game going.
However, in the next leg Michael Van Gerwen wrapped up the game comfortably securing his spot in the semi final where he goes on to face Luke Littler.
Nathan Aspinall 4-6 Gerwyn Price
This match saw two players who were looking to pick up their first points of the Premier League campaign with Gerwyn Price coming off a midweek victory in the Players Championship 2.
The Asp took the first leg of the match with a ton plus checkout, dealing the first blow in the competition between two players who fans didn’t think deserved to be picked for the Premier League.
In the third leg, Gerwyn Price hit a Shanghai finish to hold his throw which led to Price letting out a classic ‘BOOYAH’ which built up the atmosphere within the crowd.
After narrowly missing the bullseye for the big fish, Aspinall was soon 4-2 down after Price pinned double five and was seen to really get into his rhythm.
Aspinall soon hit back with two legs and to bring the game level as he hit a 138 checkout to raise the roof off the OVO Hydro in Glasgow.
Another miss of the bull caused Aspinall to lose another leg as he misses a chance to take the lead with Price missing double five for a 130 checkout which Price then goes and checks out.
Price wrapped up the match after missing one match dart already however Aspinall was unable to capitalise on the mistake with Price running out as winner.
Luke Humphries 6-4 Chris Dobey
A repeat of the final in Belfast last week, Luke Humphries looked to get one over on Chris Dobey again.
Humphries flew out of the traps looking to continue his good form and clinical finished as he missed the second Players Championships this week.
They traded the next couple of legs with both players holding their throws for the first four legs of the match, but in the fifth leg a big 180 left Chris Dobey on 64 which he took out and put himself into the lead.
This high scoring from Dobey kicked Humphries into gear and his point scoring improved which led to an 11-darter from Humphries with him breaking back and taking the game to 4-4.
Then in the final leg of the game, Humphries was down to 47 after nine darts putting himself in control of the game and rounded off the match with a 12 darter proving to everybody why he is the world number one.
Semi Finals:
Luke Littler 6-2 Michael Van Gerwen
A rematch of the World Championship Final Michael Van Gerwen had been looking to get back-to-back wins in the Premier League against Luke Littler, after a 6-5 win in Belfast.
The game started like the World Championship Final with Littler bombarding the treble 20 and with Van Gerwen not being able to reply as Littler sprung into a 3-0 with a 115-finish stunning Van Gerwen.
After Littler hit the bull to make the match 5-1, Van Gerwen looked defeated and like he was reliving the final.
Van Gerwen managed to pull a leg back but ultimately Littler had too much scoring power for Van Gerwen to deal with and lost the game 6-2, with The Green Machine looking like a different player to his quarter final match.
Gerwyn Price 4-6 Luke Humphries
Price struck first in the second semi-final of the night and instantly breaking the Humphries throw.
Humphries instantly broke back and pulled off an outstanding 138 finish hitting a double double to get the crowd out of their seats to set up a great tie.
Price once again broke the Humphries throw after poor finishing from the world number one left the door open for Price to take advantage.
Throughout the match, crowd whistling was a problem with Price and Humphries both getting irritated by fans with Price retaliating with a whistling gesture back to fans.
Ultimately like his nickname Humphries was cool in the moment and capitalised on mistakes from Price and wrapped up a 6-4 against the Welshman.
Final:
Luke Littler 6-5 Luke Humphries
In the final the world number one and two faced on in a repeat off the 2024 Premier League Final in which Luke Littler prevailed over his namesake.
In the third leg of the game, Littler set up the 170 hoping he could pull off the biggest finish in the game. After Humphries left himself on 12, Littler being Littler, he then went on to take out the 170 and let out an animated celebration.
Crowd behaviour once again was questioned as fans were continuously whistling in the next couple of legs mostly to distract Humphries as he went into a 5-4 lead with referee Kirk Bevins having to step in and tell the crowd to stop, which both players thought caused the fans to do it more.
Littler then hit straight back to take the game to a final leg decider where he hit a 165 to set up 40 which he took out in one dart to take the victory on night two.
These results puts Humphries three points at the top of the table with Littler on five points with them two being the expected forces to win the Premier League this year.
