MR SWALEDALE – THE DOCUMENTARY by Georgia Hird
‘Mr Swaledale’ is a glimpse into the life of retired Swaledale farmer, John Waggett who shares a lifetime of knowledge about the dale and how to farm it. John lived on a tennant farm for 73 years which he took over from his father. John last year passed the farm onto his nephew, Michael as he had no sons himself. This was important to John to keep it in the family as the farm has been in the family for over 100 years.
The documentary sees John complete a series of different farming jobs whilst talking about the past, the present and the future of farming and Swaledale.
What makes John different to others in the dale is that he is so full of knowledge and the history of Swaledale, the way he phrases his thoughts and ideas is so raw and natural it makes what he says more interesting. Also, John is one of few dales folk to still speak is broad Swaledale dialect which adds to the interest around him and enhances the entertainment value of the documentary.
What I want the audience to see from this documentary is what farming in Swaledale is really like and how true and raw the people are. I have experienced this all my life and now I want to share it with everyone else as it is a subject very close to my heart. This and he gives you ‘Mr Swaledale.’

I was born to work with the cameras. As a child, I was always taking pictures, recording family events and videoing the animals I was surrounded by. Growing up, I have been lucky enough to turn my passion into a successful career working as a documentary maker and taking pictures of everything from charity balls to pet portraits.
