The highly-anticipated £40m Digital Life building is preparing to open its doors next month on our Teesside campus.

The building has taken over a year to complete and aims to open officially at the end of next month.

According to the university, this cutting-edge facility aims to “redefine the student experience” by providing state-of-the-art facilities for learning, teaching, research, and innovation in digital technologies. This will include computer science, cloud computing, cyber security, virtual production and visual effects designed for the ever-evolving digital age.

The design of the building was inspired by technology. The patterning on the outside references the idea of ‘glitches’ in digital data, creating a textured and layered nuanced graphic pattern. The design is said to represent a fusion of technology and nature, with the holes symbolising openness and ideas passing through, stimulating creativity and innovation.

Professor Chrisina Jayne, Dean of the School of Computing, Engineering and Digital Technology (SCEDT) said: “Digital Life provides an industry-quality virtual studio production stage, attractive for students and businesses. It incorporates teaching labs for cloud computing, AI, cyber security, robotics, games, animation, and an immersive classroom.

“It features a 750-person capacity auditorium that is completely reconfigurable, providing a central resource ready to respond to future technologies and enhance the university’s opportunities for broader engagement with businesses and communities.”

Courses from SCEDT and the School of Arts and Creative Industries (SACI) will have access to the new facility, with existing students having classes there in the next academic year.
