Teesside University students – What do they think of the royal family?

King Charles and Queen Camilla recently visited Middlesbrough, the first time the royal family have visited the town in over 30 years.

We asked local Teesside students about how they feel about the royal family.

Jack Crosby, 21, student, said: “Economically they bring in money from tourism. Some people complain about the tax money that goes to them but they bring in far more than we pay to them. They have a prestigious history but personally I don’t see them as huge celebrities.”

Connlon Reilly, 20, student, said: “They bring in a lot of tourism, they represent the country well when they travel abroad. They bring in lots of money to the country although I feel they have a lack of accountability. The Prince Andrew scandal being a big example of that.”

Eugene Lua, 27, student, said: “I think that they should have more involvement in politics. I think the monarch should have executive power to make the changes that the people want to make.

“London and the surrounding areas have developed quickly due to the impact of the royal family living there. I think the royals should also live in the North in order to bring in tourism.”

Jacob McMahon, 21, student, said: “I think that London should only have to pay taxes towards the King as they only see the benefits from tourism. Lots of people in the North don’t have a lot of disposable income so it doesn’t seem fair that the King gets money from them.”
